This work is based on a program I saw about a group of men doing drag. I was so fascinated watching those men who were so liberated when they changed the persona, and in a different environment – while I was so moved by the background story of each man.
So, I used the imagery in Undertow to translate the idea of how people can feel better (happier) in a different identity and environment, although the environment can be very extreme (undercurrent). It was, I suppose, this is an abstract way of connecting and reinterpreting the idea of acceptance and the meaning of being ourselves.
